網路上流傳著 Bill Gates (比爾蓋茲) 曾經對一所高中演講叫做 11 Rules your kids did not learn in school. 讀完後,感同身受,不禁把 Bill Gates 這篇演講和賈伯斯在史丹福大學的演講相互連結.在我近一步想要瞭解這些Rules時, 才發現這些金玉良言不是出字Bill Gates 而是Charles Sykes 的書

50 Rules Kids Won't Learn at School
之所以被傳為是Bill Gates說的,而且又被精簡成11 Rules的原因是第11條: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one. (nerd 是笨蛋) 也許大家都認為用 nerd 來形容比爾蓋茲最為恰當

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2: The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to anything in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is not real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Penny 來電表示不瞭解與未來事實相反的句子. 藉此我將所有假設語氣整理一下

一般與未來事實相反的句子和與現在事實相反是同一種句型

If + 過去簡單, 主要句子用 should / would/ might/could +原形V
★ If 句中的動詞為過去式，而Be動詞不論人稱為何，一律用were ★

If I had enough money, I would buy you a house tomorrow. (事實明天我不會買,因為沒錢)
If I were you, I would not do it.

與過去事實相反

If + had +p.p. , 主要子句用 should/would/ might/could+ have + p.p

If I had finished my homework, I should have earned the gift yesterday.
昨天如果我寫完功課, 就可以得到禮物 (事實沒寫也沒得到禮物)
If you had told me about the problem, I would have helped you.

＊結果句的意思和「現在」有關時，其動詞要改成 would +原形V。此句型通常和now,today等字連用。
If you had told me about your plan, we would go shopping today.
(你如果告訴我你的計畫,我們今天就可以去購物了)

與未來事實相反而且幾乎是「不可能發生的事」

If + were to +原形V , 主要子句用should / would/ might/could +原形V

If the sun were to rise in the west, I would fall in love with you.
如果太陽從西邊升起,我會愛上你 (事實不可能)

與未來事實相反有”萬一”的解釋

If + should +原形V, 主要子句用should(或 shall) + 原形V
                                                  would(或will)
                                                    might(或may)
                                                  could (或can)

If it should rain tomorrow, the picnic will be canceled.   萬一明天下雨,野餐會被取消

a. If sun were to rise in the west, I would not change my mind.

b. If I were to be reborn, I would be a musician.

c. If I should fail, I would (will) do it again.
d. If it should rain tomorrow, the picnic will be canceled.

所以不能只說與未來事實相反,要更近一步說出是那一種語意才有辦法決定正確的句子.

Rescue workers in northwestern China continue to search for survivors after massive landslides swept through the region on August 8. Heavy rains and flash flooding from the weekend triggered muddy landslides that engulfed villages and roads. More than 1,100 people have been killed in the disaster, and at least 627 people are still missing, local officials say. About 45,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes.

Floodwaters have killed more than 2,000 people across the country in the past month and caused tens of billions of dollars in damage. More heavy rain and landslides are expected to hit the region this week.

The northwestern parts of the country have been hit particularly hard by the flooding. In rural areas in the Gansu province, drenching storms caused the Bailong River to overflow. The landslides that resulted turned the streets of nearby towns to mud, overturned cars and caused houses to collapse.

For a day, a weekend, a week, up to even a month or two, Chinese companies are willing to pay high prices for fair-faced foreigners to join them as fake employees or business partners.

And it is, essentially, all about the age-old Chinese concept of face. To have a few foreigners hanging around means a company has prestige, money and the increasingly crucial connections -- real or not -- to businesses abroad.
